1. All residents of Wonderland are paradoxical.

I already explained in chapter 4 that rays of light are paradoxical. They behave simultaneously like particles and waves, which is akin to claiming that something is simultaneously black and white.

No one can fully understand such a flagrant logical contradiction, not even Einstein himself.

In 1954, a year before he died, Einstein confessed to his old friend Michele Besso, “The whole fifty years of conscious brooding have not brought me nearer to the answer to the question, ‘What are light quanta?’ Nowadays every scalawag believes he knows what they are, but he deceives himself.”[6]

And the translogical strangeness doesn’t end there.

An electron, for example. Physicists used to believe it was a particle, plain and simple. But now we know that it, too, behaves simultaneously like a particle and a wave. The discovery of that profound, translogical reality is credited to a French grad student of noble birth named Louis-Victor Pierre Raymond de Broglie.[7]

These translogical entities don’t just inhabit a far-removed, Wonderland-like quantum realm. They’re the stuff you and I are made of!

At your very core, in other words, you are a living, breathing logical contradiction. You are a translogical, metaphysical creature, more strange, more inscrutable, more unimaginable than your own mind can fully fathom.
